 RANELAGH HARRIERS E-NEWS # 48 19 DECEMBER 2001
 Web site: http://www.surreyweb.net/rharriers
 **************************************************************************
This Saturday we're taking on South London Harriers in our annual mob match
for the Stubbs Cup. It's on their course at Farthing Downs, Coulsdon,
starting at 2.30pm. The Saturday before Christmas is never perhaps the best
day for a race, but the most important thing is that we field a decent
number of runners - so please be there if you can. The SLH clubhouse is on
the A23 right in the middle of Coulsdon. Afterwards SLH are holding a quiz
night in their clubhouse - see below for details.

The Henty Relay on Saturday December 29th really is a race for all the
family no matter how slow or unfit. Teams of three are drawn on the day, and
the more taking part the better the race. Be there by 1.30pm to be sure of
 getting into a team.

Last Saturday we hosted the third fixture in the men's and women's Surrey
League Division One programme. But home ground turned out to be no advantage
for our men's team. With four of our top six finishers from the previous race
all missing we knew we were in for a struggle - and so it proved. Only
Julian and Marcus made the top 50 and our final scorer was down in 118th
place as opposed to 89th last time. There was another good run from Paul
Doyle and it was pleasing to see Geoff Jones in action again, but the final
result was 7th place on the day and a loss of two places overall to 6th.
With one race to go we're in no danger of relegation and we're still well
within striking distance of the two clubs immediately ahead of us, so
there's plenty to play for in the final race on February 2nd.

Like husband Geoff in the men's race, Wendy Jones was an unexpected but
welcome addition to the team. She led the way with our best individual
placing of the season so far, 12th. Newly crowned club women's champ Liz
Kipling celebrated by catching a bad cold but she spluttered round to 23rd,
just ahead of League debutante Anne Fallows. Sarah Seal and Kathy Mallett
closed in the team, but they were closely followed by a whole horde of blue
vests demonstrating an impressive strength in depth in our women's section
this year. In the three League races so far, with five to count in each, no
less than twelve different runners have made the Ranelagh scoring team! 4th
place in the team scoring was our best result so far this year, and we moved
up one place to 5th overall.
Strengthened by the return of Estelle Damant our under 20s took advantage of
a below-strength Guildford team to record their first win of the season,
though the Guildford squad retain the overall lead. Estelle ran well for 2nd
place, with Louise Webster, Alice Beverly and Jessica Harvey all backing up
well. Estelle's result was echoed by Anair Beverly in the Under 15s and also
by Alex Hook, 8th overall in the Under 15 race but 2nd in the Under 13
category. The team finished 4th but remains 5th overall.

 NATIONALS
Sarah Seal writes on behalf of herself and men's captain Andy Bickerstaff:
"The National XC champs are to be held on Saturday 23rd February 2002 in
Bristol (Ashton Court) Senior women start at 2.00pm and men at 3.00pm. Andy
and I need all names of those who want to be entered by 31st December
(entries have to be in by 5th Jan!) so if people want to run they need to
 let us know asap!"
The Nationals, by the way, are now open to anyone - we're not restricted to
nine per club as we used to be. So if anyone would like to enjoy the unique
experience of running in a 'National' they should go for it! Contact
details for Sarah and Andy are shown below.

 QUIZ
As mentioned above, South London Harriers are holding a quiz night in their
clubhouse at Coulsdon after our mob match with them this Saturday, starting
at 7pm. We could do with one or two more bodies to help make up a couple of
teams to fly the flag for Ranelagh, so if anyone else would like to join in
 please let me know.
